LTG (Ret.) Alonzo E. Short Jr. (1994)

Entering the Army in 1962, LTG (Ret.) Alonzo Short held a variety of assignments throughout his 30-year career, including executive officer of a Signal battalion in Europe; staff planning and engineering officer in Vietnam; battalion S-3, executive officer and battalion commander in Okinawa; then a second tour in Vietnam as an adviser. Back in the United States, he was assigned as a staff officer in the Defense Communications Agency (now the Defense Information Systems Agency); then as battalion commander, 101st Airborne (Air Assault) Division, Fort Campbell, Ky.; staff planner with the Army Communications Command at Fort Huachuca, Ariz.; commander, 3d Signal Brigade, Fort Hood, Texas; and deputy commander of the Army’s Electronics Research and Development Command, Adelphi, Md.

LTG Short also commanded Information Systems Management Activity while at the same time becoming program manager for Army information systems at Fort Monmouth, N.J. He then became deputy commander of Information Systems Engineering Command and later commander. Other general-officer assignments were Information Systems Command deputy commander, Information Systems Command commander and director, Defense Information Systems Agency/manager, National Communications System.

His awards and decorations include the Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star medal with oak-leaf cluster and Meritorious Service Medal with oak-leaf cluster. The Signal Regiment inducted him as a Distinguished Member in 1994.
